Our Story
At the end of the second year of their chemistry degree, in May 2021, our founders, Milan Singh, Sofia Schoenbauer, and Elena Rubini, came up with the idea to create a student-led magazine and, they chose their passion for the subject as the foundation of their new project. They identified the perceived difficulty of the field, despite being surrounded by it. By founding this magazine, their aim was to eliminate that misunderstanding, by attempting to make chemistry a subject that their target audience would enjoy , while learning aspects of chemistry they were not so familiar with either.
After a couple of weeks of planning, they were ready to get more people involved in their initiative. Firstly, they recruited some of their peers, other second-year chemistry students from their course, and decided to assign different roles according to everyone's preferences. This is when the sub-teams formed, led by the three of them: Milan Singh, director of the graphic editorial team and provisional head of the marketing team; Sofia Schoenbauer and Elena Rubini, both writer directors . As the summer break came to end, more students from other universities and courses started to join.
Summer 2021... The time when each individual of the newly formed 'The Catalyst' team cooperated with a tireless effort to prepare the first edition, released in September of the same year, including writing all of the articles, creating the magazine and building this very website. We are ambitious and we aim to expand this team, which is why we are still recruiting to make the magazine more accessible for everyone.
Our target audience
This magazine is dedicated to anyone interested in chemistry, which ranges from undergraduate and postgraduate university students to professionals, mainly inside the chemistry field.
In addition, we have several pages and posts on our socials dedicated to chemistry students like us. For instance, we post study tips or must-have apps for university students on Instagram and, we offer a careers page to help students discover what the chemistry world has stored for them on this website.
Our founders
Elena Rubini
'Enriching my knowledge about science by reading publications such as Nature has sparked my desire to co-found The Catalyst and tailor a publication to chemistry loving and curious audience. My goal in this initiative is to provide a student’s perspective on sharing knowledge about the multifaceted and transversal nature of chemistry and the endless applications that this branch of science offers, thereby connecting chemists and budding chemists around the globe.'
Milan Singh
'The reason I decided to co-found The Catalyst not only dives into my personal interests within the field, but originates largely from a perceived lack of information when choosing a career path after graduation. Our innovative magazine attempts to address this issue by presenting broader areas within the subject pivoted around industrial applications and academia, ranging from therapeutic to sustainable chemistry and ultimately spreading science communication. '
Sofia Schoenbauer
'Having enjoyed writing since childhood, and being interested in exploring unknown topics, I decided to co-found this magazine to enhance my experience preparing for a career in chemistry. My vision for The Catalyst is to reach out to other (forming) chemists and show the potential, the variety, and the career options that our science has.'
